Salt lakes phenomena has popularized island Mljet abroad. Big lake has a surface area of 145 hectar and depth of 29 meters and it is connected with open sea in the Soline bay. With its secrets it is attractive to all nature lovers with different professional and personal orientation. 

System of the Big and Small lake represents unique geological and oceanographic phenomena in karst, which is significant worldwide. From 10.000 years b.c. untill begining of christian period, these salt lakes were freshwater lakes.

On island you can see welthy developed forest ecosystem which was covering huge cost areas of the Mediterranean but now only exists here as in original form. Trees are growing even on the shores of lakes because they are well protected from waves and gusts. There are many endemic species around the lakes, one of which is Centaurea ragusina L.
