Korita is village in inland formed in the 15th century after the migration from Žara and after devastation of Okuklje.
It was named after the natural stone depressions which were filled with a water during rainy days.
Due to it`s geographic location, Korita was important strategic position to monitor the waters of Mljet Channel and the open sea.
In the middle of the village is the tower that was used to defense of frequent pirate attacks. During the 17th and 18th century people were engaged in fishing and place become rich.Main occupation was catching and selling salted fish particularly sardines.
During that time the village was settled by the nobels from Dubrovnik, Ston and other regions, and Korita takes characteristics of urban center. With sudden disappearance of sardines in late 18th century Korita become poor and lots of people emigrates and many others are dying of sudden plague.
Korita has church of St. Vid (and the village cemetery) from 16th century, Gospa od Brijega, 14th century ( near is an old local cemetery and it is belived that in the 14th and 15th century thtre were larger settlement in that in written documents was named Seoce - hamlet!) and the church of St.. Ilija (Elias) from 16th century wich is also local patron.. Feast of St.. Elias is celebrated 20.07. in Korita. Holy Mass in the parish church. .In Koria there is also a church of St Mark and St Clare `s house.
